The unsaid reason for the ownership and stockpiling of military grade weapons by civilians is the belief that at some point there will be an armed revolution.
I am a veteran. I am a former LEO. I am a former weapons expert. I don’t want to take away your right to own and bear arms. I do want to restrict the type of guns you may own. Guns used for hunting, fine. Guns owned for personal protection, fine. Guns owned for competition shooting, fine. Guns to keep pace with the military arsenal — prove to me that you need those.
There is only one reason to own military grade weapons — to kill other Americans. The only reason you want to own military grade weapons is to assuage your fear. The only reason to own and cache military assault weapons is because at some level you believe that eventually there will be a need for armed revolt. Either society has failed, the grid has gone down, and people are coming for your family’s food and there is no longer a Government to provide protection — Or the Government has turned on the citizenry and those weapons will be required to be able to defend yourself against the military or police. Because of fear we are in an arms race with ourselves.
I believe in the second amendment. I believe that you should be able to own and bear arms in your own home. I don’t want to take your guns. I also believe that the constitution was created as a living document. Created to evolve as our country evolves. The second amendment was written at a time when arms needed to be muzzle loaded with a ram rod. Weapons technology has moved forward. And so should we.
Let’s at least have the debate. It’s the least we can do in the memory of all our fellow Americans who have been gunned down and for those who will fall in the future.
